The people in New Orleans take Mardi Gras very seriously. Festival goers don their green, gold, and purple — representing faith, power, and justice — for the parades, balls, and parties that celebrate the Carnival season. The holiday, originally dating back to medieval Europe, has been celebrated in the United States since 1703 and culminates on Fat Tuesday, a legal holiday in Louisiana. Mardi Gras boasts many traditions, but among the most popular are king cake, masks, “throws,” and Flambeaux.
